We had read several articles all centering on the topic of Violence Against Women in my philosophy class and this morning we were discussing all of them. The last article we talked about was entitled, "The Inevitability of the Patriarchism.”

I should point out that there is one kid in class that drives me insane. I’m sure that he’s going to become a politician of some form or other because he can spend 5 minutes saying absolutely nothing, just to hear himself speak. He makes ridiculous comparisons and loves generalizations and stereotypes. And yet somehow everyone in class thinks he’s intelligent. His latest bit of wisdom was to state unequivocally that men who rape women are like boys who abuse cats, they both have psychological problems and the reason that he’s not going to go out and rape someone is that he doesn’t have any psychological problems. He also recently compared pregnancy to “uncontrollable diarrhea” in terms of how it affects one’s career.

So, we’re discussing the article on patriarchism, and the general consensus of the class is that the author is correct, men have always been the dominant rulers of society. They don’t all agree on the fact that it’s how it should be, but many people kept bringing up the “fact” that all societies throughout history have been patriarchal. My response to the author’s argument was merely to say that his position completely disregarded the hundreds if not thousands of matriarchal societies that have also existed. I sited Native American societies such as the Iroquois or Seneca and other indigenious groups in Indonesia.

The response? Yes, but they didn’t last very long.

Me: Um…if by not long you mean only several thousand years, then yes, you’re right.

Yeah, but where are they now? They’re all dead…They were squashed.

He actually said that they were squashed. I had no response. I’ve never actually been insulted like that before. It’s one thing for me to joke about all the natives being dead…but fuck.

i haven't really posted anything because i don't know what to say. so much has happened and so much is hanging in the air. sometimes i wonder if my life is really my own. i hate feeling helpless or goaded into a situation and yet i am constantly feeling that pressure. that pull to be this or that. to do this or do that. and then there are my own flaws that i allow to put me in situations that are harmful or that i know will hold me back. and my life of late seems to be a constant mix of all of these things. if i knew how to ask for help or support i think i'd do it, but we all know that i'm terrible with that.

i was told to take these next two days and focus on myself. my life. what it is that i really want so that the decisions i make will truly be my own.

i'm tired of the pain, my own and others. if i could fix everything i would. as it is i feel i have the choice of either being a selfish bastard or giving up on that which might have been my own.

why is nothing in my life ever easy?

i wish more than anything that i'd taken my tape recorder with me last night to session. there were several people from Donnegal there and they sang some songs- amazing. one gaelic song was gorgeous. and they played a different version of a tune i really like, that i wish i now had.

so...apparently i'm ADD or ADHD (they're not sure. more tests are necessary) and dyslexic. hooray for me.

So Daniel and Corey helped me move my stuff into my dorm room and sometime during that process a joke was made (i don't remember by whom) that they (the school) had stuck all the minorities in a corner (because my suite is in the corner and both my roommate and the other girl i met were black). Well guess what? IT'S TRUE. In our suite there are four african american girls, a lebanese girl, two girls from Spain, and one white girl (but who is from Hawaii). Everyone else on the floor is white. All the minorites are in the corner.

Oh life, you're amazing.
